Spanish for Educators is a course designed to meet the communication needs of educators, and other school personnel, who need to interact with non-English speaking students and their families in the context of school situations.
Melissa W- I think this is a great idea! The smiles on the students' faces and the sense of accomplishment that you can see is amazing. This is a truly hard concept to carry out. To listen to them say the word in Spanish and then how to spell it and then remember how to spell it in Spanish is amazing to me! It was great to see the mom say that she couldn't get her student to practice at home but here they were practicing for this really was great to see. How would be do it at our school? Who would run it? How would we get the kids home after school if we did it after school? Could we do it during the day? Would we have students that were interested? I know some staff members that speak fluent Spanish, that I may have to approach about this. I can see there confidence and skill set improve.
This is a really fun way to engage the students in Spanish. I think having to think in Spanish to hear the word and then spell it is a huge accomplishment for the kids! I wonder how this would do at my school because so many of my students speak Spanish fluently, but I am not sure if they are literate in their language. It would interesting to see if it would be challenging for them or not. The one student's mom appeared to be very happy about the spelling bee and her child's participation. -Tara Pistar
Los beneficios de participar en un concurso de ortografía son aumentar el conocimiento de la ortografía y establecer un aumento en la confianza. (The benefits of participating in a spelling contest are to increase spelling awareness and to establish an increase in confidence.)
sí, la ortografía es útil porque te ayuda a leer y escribir textos complejos. (yes spelling is useful because it helps you to read and write complex text. )
Puedes hacer que el concurso sea divertido incorporando juegos. (You can make the contest fun by incorporating games.)

The benefits of participating in a spanish spelling contest is so that students can practice using the spanish letters and knowing the correct pronunciations for each letter when hearing the word. The spelling contest is useful because it helps students to become more aware of the sounds of letters. You can make spelling fun by doing games and pracitcing in different ways.
This is an amazing way to engage students in a real-world and global connection to what they are learning in class. This real world application reinforces the vocabulary that they are learning in their Spanish classes. I love how there is obviously a ton of community buy-in as well; parents and other guardians are attending to "cheer" their students on and see direct evidence of their learning. I do feel that this is a great way to also invite the community in to feel more comfortable in the school. Many parents and guardians have negative experiences in their own school careers. The students are engaged (and SO proud!) of their accomplishments, students feel a sense of ownership over their learning, and the teachers are helping to assess learning in a way that is fun. Spelling is challenging enough in your native tongue, so witnessing these students able to successfully spell words in a new language is so exciting.
Engaging students in a Spanish spelling contest provides a differnt avenue to assess their learning. Additionally, these spelling contests are fun, practical, and - as the Espanol 1 student mentions in the video, 'possible for everyone."
The Spanish Spelling Bee contest was awesome to watch! I think a spelling contest is an engaging way to involve students and it gives them opportunities to hear words/sentences in Spanish and then think about what the word means and also how to spell it. 35 students seems like a pretty large group turnout as well! I enjoyed hearing the kids talk about what the contest meant to them and how it provided them with a new sense of confidence and pride! One student even said she was excited to help teach her parents. The impact is stretching beyond the school walls. The Kindle prize and diplomas were also an added benefit/excitement of doing well! I think spelling, reading and writing are all important and necessary means of communication and a spelling be is a fun way to practice!
The benefits of participating in Spanish spelling bee is an overall academic success for the participants. *As the students prepare for the contest they interact with peers, teachers and parents. *Some of the parents are native Spanish speakers .These parents are happy and proud to support their children in this contest. *the confidence of the participants increases tremendously. *It is fun to be with friends while learning the spelling. There is equal amount of laughter and tears during preparation.
Yes, spelling is useful. We can make it fun by having games or even the "Pictionary" game with Spanish words. They can spell the word being illustrated.

This was so awesome to watch! I can see such benefits to students participating in Spanish spelling contests. Students can practice listening to and using the correct pronunciation of Spanish letters when hearing the different words. It is a fun way for them to 'play' and practice what they are learning in a different and interactive way!
I've always found spelling bees pretty impressive, but seeing students who are spelling in a language they didn't necessarily grow up with is even more impressive. My school loves competition and sports, I'd imagine getting the Spanish classes involved in a spelling bee would be pretty well received by the students. I'd imagine it'd also game-ify gaining confidence in speaking and spelling the language.
I definitely felt joy from each of the students that were interviewed on this video. Not only is it a healthy way to compete but a great way to involve all students. How great was it to watch and see it didn't only include Spanish speakers. I especially loved the community coming out to support an academic event. They say learning multiple languages helps you in all areas of life. Being able to spell another language, wow, I am blown away. I could definitely see this being a great addition to our schools if initiated in the proper format. I also liked it how it built the student's confidence and pride which will in turn make them believe they can truly do anything.
The spelling bee video was great. It was so nice to see the pride and accomplishment that these students felt. I love one the one student talked about how he learned most of the Spanish words just this school year. It was nice to see kids participate in something that was not athletic and being able to spell so well in another language is just amazing. I'm really impressed with these students. I hope that one day I will be able to spell that well in Spanish :)
This was a great way to engage the students and give them an opportunity to practice their language skills. I was really impressed with the fluency they already had with just a few years of Spanish.
